Sam Perkins

Sam Perkins is the Catawba Riverkeeper at the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, which has protected and advocated for the Catawba-Wateree River since 1997. Sam was born in raised in Charlotte, North Carolina, with frequent trips hiking and visiting family in the mountains around Asheville. He has undergraduate degrees in journalism and in environmental studies from UNC-Chapel Hill. After working in a marine sciences geochemistry lab for four years as an undergrad, he stayed for a Master of Science degree in geochemistry and hydrology, finishing in 2011. Upon joining the Foundation in 2012, he starting working on a breadth of issues, including coal ash, water quantity, factory agriculture, sewage sludge and much more. He lives with a wife and son in Charlotte, where he also enjoys freelance writing, disc golf and craft beer.
